Westfield W-League Centurian Leena Khamis will be reunited with her sister after penning a deal with Canberra United for the 2019/20 Season.
Former Sydney FC star Khamis has played in 103 Westfield W-League games since the competition’s formation and will begin back-to-back campaigns with a new club.
The 33-year-old moved across the Harbour City to Western Sydney Wanderers in 2018/19, but she now heads to the ACT to play alongside goalkeeper Sham Khamis.
The pair last played together during their finals seasons at Sydney FC and Leena cannot wait to once again walk out alongside her sibling in the Westfield W-League.
“This will be my 12th season in the Westfield W-League, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play with a new team in a new environment,” Khamis said.
“I love playing alongside Sham.
“It will be a special moment for our family seeing us reunite again.”
“We’ve played with each other for many years and we really push each other in training.
“She definitely tries extra hard when I attempt to score against her and I definitely make it known when she lets one in.”
Khamis is seventh in the Westfield W-League’s all-time goalscorer charts with 40 goals and has pulled on a Westfield Matildas jersey on 25 occasions, including at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011.
Head coach Heather Garriock expects the veteran striker to bring a wealth of qualities to the Canberra United roster in 2019/20.
“I cannot speak highly enough of Leena as a player and a person,” Garriock said.
“She will bring a great amount of experience, drive, and accountability to the squad and I’m so pleased she will be in green this season alongside sister Sham.”
